The Position
Kaufman, Hall & Associates, LLC is seeking a Database Engineer for our Revenue and Operations Improvement practice. You will take shared ownership over the database architecture supporting the analysis of large, complex data sets for Clinical Documentation Improvement initiatives within healthcare systems across the country. The technology you develop will support our client service team and our healthcare clients ranging from large academic medical centers to integrated health systems to small community hospitals. The primary function of this role will be working within our application development process to develop databases and database code, with a focus on stored procedures to facilitate our analytic models. You will also contribute to the ETL automation processes for our clients. You will work cross-functionally with others on the application development team and others within the broader business.

We offer a series of products and services within the healthcare industry, targeted to help healthcare organizations improve performance. Our products help improve operational and billing processes, driving incremental financial improvement, and ultimately help improve outcomes for our clients. This individual would have significant prior Microsoft SQL Server database experience working with large, complex datasets, database design, data modeling, developing SQL queries, stored procedures, automation, database code tuning and performance optimization, and ETL processes. This individual will:
  • Function as a database engineer, supporting multiple database solutions and developing database code for these solutions.
  • Work closely with others on the Tech Team to develop best-in-class data management solutions.
  • Work with the team to design/build modern, secure, and performant ETL processes for client data.
  • Revise existing systems and code to maintain effective data handling, conversion, input/output requirements, and storage.
  • Work within an Agile development environment and participate in all aspects of our software development life cycle (SDLC).
  • Become a subject matter expert regarding our software applications, their database structures, and their application in solving complex business problems for our clients.
  • Work with the data and infrastructure team to design and build out an Azure SQL Managed Instance (MI) data warehouse and associated data models.
  • Become a SME and help the broader team make decisions on data model structure and outputs.
  • Communicate effectively with non-technical team members, leadership, and business contacts and promote a strong sense of teamwork.
  • In addition, you will be asked to bring creativity to this role as we continue to refine our offerings and continually seek to improve our current data model and output.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Azure, and SSIS.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, create and manipulate complex databases, with both transactional and analytical database systems.
  • Experience with data automation processes and ETL automation tools.
  • Experience with database design and development in a full stack environment.
  • Experience with database design with well-honed SQL skills, the ability to create relational data models, create and adjust complex views and stored procedures, tune database performance, and perform quality control testing using SQL.
  • Experience writing stored procedures.
  • Experience in performance tuning of queries, using SQL Profiler, evaluating execution plans, and other methods. Experience with Azure App Insights is a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure DevOps and Redgate.
  • Familiarity with Agile development models.
  • Experience working with data visualization tools is a plus. Tableau preferred.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective and positive relationships with team members.
  • Excellent conceptual and analytical skills, organizational skills, critical thinking, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent self-learner with high aptitude to acquire and learn new skills.

Education: BS/BA in computer science or related field preferred.

Work Environment 
  • Travel Required: Minimal 0-5%.
  • The role is preferably based in Chicago, with the option to be remote.
  • Work is regularly performed in a combination of office and home office settings, and routinely uses standard office equipment.
  • It may require the maintenance of a home office and proximity to an airport for work related travel.
